What is an API (Application Program Interface)
An application program interface (API) is a code that allows two software programs to communicate with each other. An API defines the correct way for a developer to request services from an operating system (OS) or other application and expose data within different contexts and across multiple channels. An API key is a code passed in by computer programs calling an API to identify the calling program, its developer, or its user to the Web site. API keys are used to track and control how the API is being used, for example, to prevent malicious use or abuse of the API (as defined perhaps by terms of service).
